Arthur R. Bethke
1921 - 2000 Arthur R. Bethke was born in Chicago on November 30, 1921, the son of William and Florence Bethke. He married Virginia Alling (the daughter of Carlos Alling) and they became the parents of three children: Barbara (deceased), Douglas and Charles. Arthur Bethke attended the University of Chicago, where he earned a B.A. degree in 1942. He went on to attend the Harvard University Graduate School of Business and was awarded his M.B.A. in 1946. He was a member of Alpha Delta Phi, was elected to the All-American Swimming Team in 1941, and was a member of two National Champion Water Polo Teams-in 1948 and in 1949. From 1943 to 1946 he served in the U.S. Army, as a Captain in the Transportation Corps stationed at the headquarters in New York and San Francisco Ports of Embarkation. He was awarded a Letter of Commendation and an Oak Leaf Cluster for these Army services. He began his work with Darling in November of 1946. He was elected vice president and a director in 1953, and vice president and director of Darling-Delaware in 1962. He has served as chairman of the Fatty Acids Association, and director of the National Renderers Association. From 1963 to 1968 Mr. Bethke served as president of the Consolidated Rendering Co. (Corenco Corp.) in Boston, Mass. From 1969 to the date of the publishing of his Centenary, Mr. Bethke has been the owner and president of the Concord Oil Company, Inc. in Concord, Mass, R. Murphy Co. in Ayer, Mass, and Trustee of Muster Realty Trust, Concord, Mass. Mr. Bethke served as president of the Concord Chamber of Commerce, in Concord, Mass., for 1975 and 1976. These were the bicentennial years for the Concord Chamber. He was also one of the incorporators of Middlesex Institution for Savings, and Emerson Hospital in Concord Ma. He was also chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee for the town of Concord, Mass. in 1979. |
